THE BLACK SAINT AND THE SINNER LADY AT BRIGHTON FESTIVAL
In Association with Nu Civilisation Orchestra
Saturday 16 – Sunday 17 May 2026
Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, BN1 1EE
“A joyful celebration of movement” – The Guardian *****
Celebrate the sensuality and power of jazz as we team up once again with Nu Civilsation Orchestra to present Charles Mingus’ iconic 1963 masterpiece, widely considered to be one of the greatest records of all time.
Following sell-out runs at Shoreditch Town Hall and Barbican Centre, the production now brings its electrifying energy to Brighton Festival 2026. Directed by Suzy Willson, Clod Ensemble’s dynamic company of dancers will join the 12-piece live orchestra, led by MOBO-nominated Peter Edwards and featuring Artistic Director Gary Crosby OBE on bass.
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is a seminal 20th century jazz composition and is still regularly cited as Mingus’ finest hour. Mingus always envisioned dance accompanying his provocative masterpiece. To honour that vision and to bring Mingus’ music to life for a new generation, Clod Ensemble and Nu Civilisation Orchestra will transform the Corn Exchange with sound and movement.
