Inspired by The Execution of Lady Jane Grey, Paul Delaroche’s 1833 painting, Lady Grey (1999) is a twenty-minute piece set to Paul Clark’s score for string quartet.
Lady Grey was only performed twice, both times at the London Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room in London. For each performance the string quartet was joined on stage by five performers delivering a tableau that moved almost imperceptibly throughout the performance. Overhead, the violinist Kwabana Lindsay played the final line as they crossed the stage.
Extract coming soon. The video recording was lost, so the only record we have is this demo recording made one afternoon at Queen Mary University. The superb musicians showed up and sightread the whole piece – it was recorded in a couple of takes.
