Imagining Animals is inspired by animals  from all over the globe, including those who have inhabited the site – from the prehistoric creatures that roamed by the river before the Tower even existed, to the animals from around the world that were kept at the Royal Menagerie as symbols of power and status for 600 years.

Imagining Animals has been woven together by a rich tapestry of artists, performers, musicians and makers, and features live performances by nine musicians, who draw on musical traditions from around the world, including folk, sacred and Indian classical music, as well as Griot songs and many others. 

Audiences will experience a bespoke installation by scenic artist Moi Tran, suspended at Traitors’ Gate. This mobile sculpture is inspired by the movement of birds and butterflies, responding to the changing air currents that flow through this historic space.

Throughout 2025 and 2026 local residents and community groups have taken part in artist-led workshops exploring the project themes, contributing ideas, artworks and experiences that have become part of the Imagining Animals experience.

This includes a creative training programme for young people facing barriers to creative careers, a Cultural Hosts paid training programme giving local residents a pathway into employment, and the creation of Cast Wish Bird Keep, an installation by Sheila Ghelani created with Tower Hamlets community groups. Cast Wish Bird Keep will be exhibited by The Roman Wall at The Tower across the performance dates.
