In this workshop, legendary choreographer Lea Anderson will introduce ideas from her ground-breaking body of work created over four decades, particularly, how she draws on visual art references in her choreographic practice.
The session will end in a conversation between Lea Anderson and Clod Ensemble’s Co-Artistic Director Suzy Willson exploring shared references, ways of working, documentation and ideas for sustaining an artistic practice whatever the weather.
Lea will share her practice through a range of practical movement based exercises and discussion.
This event is aimed at people interested in dance, performers, producers, and archivists. No movement experience is necessary to attend this event.
Lea Anderson was born in London and trained at St Martin’s School of Art and The Laban Centre for Movement and Dance while performing as a singer in a post-punk band.
Lea co-founded The Cholmondeleys company upon graduation from The Laban Centre, London in 1984 and has been making work for the company ever since.
Lea makes work for theatre, film, tv, cabaret, site specific and social media platforms, and has also been regularly commissioned to make work for other companies including The National Dance Company of Cuba, National Folk Dance Company of Peru, Compania Danza PUCP Peru and National Dance Company Wales.
Lea has a special interest in performed exhibitions and mis-constructions of forgotten performance works using scores.
In 2002 Lea was awarded an MBE for her services to dance, and in 2006 was awarded an honorary doctorate by Dartington College of Arts. In 2014 Lea was appointed Regents Professor at the University of California, in Los Angeles.

Suzy Willson, CEO and Co-Artistic Director of Clod Ensemble, is a multi-award-winning British choreographer and director. Over nearly three decades, she has created an extraordinary body of work that pushes the boundaries of choreographic practice. Her provocative and finely crafted productions, such as Silver Swan at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall or Red Ladies performed across an entire city, often encourage audiences to view familiar environments from new perspectives. In 2006, she founded the Performing Medicine initiative to help healthcare professionals and policy makers appreciate the non-verbal and spatial aspects of care. Suzy Willson regularly contributes to journals and books, including Dance Theatre Journal, the Guardian, The Lancet, Performance Research (Routledge) and publications for Methuen.
Choreozone is a multi-year project focusing on the gathering, organising and sharing of materials in our archive. The archive documents the practices, processes and creative journeys of hundreds of artists that our Artistic Directors Suzy Willson and Paul Clark have worked with over the past three decades. Supported by significant investment from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Choreozone will see works from our repertoire reinvigorated through public showcases and micro-exhibitions, both of which will honour the original performances as well as present new interpretations of the material.
