Clod Ensemble is delighted to announce the launch of Choreozone.

Supported by significant investment from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, this multi-year project will focus on the sharing and reinterpretation of our archives.

The history of movement and music is typically told through the stories of individuals – choreographers, directors, composers and so on. However, the reality is that performance-making is a collective process. Clod Ensemble’s multimedia archive documents the practices, processes and creative journeys of hundreds of artists that our Artistic Directors Suzy Willson and Paul Clark have worked with over the past three decades.

With the announcement of Choreozone, Clod Ensemble has the resources to bring our archive to life for a new generation. Our studios on Greenwich Peninsula will host a variety of performances, exhibitions and other events based around the company’s archival productions. Works from our repertoire will be reinvigorated through public showcases and micro-exhibitions which both honour the original performances and present new takes on the material.

A major project of audio restoration, distribution and reinterpretation will be included in Choreozone. Several of Clod Ensemble’s critically acclaimed music scores will be released to the public for the first time; compositions which have never previously been recorded will be put to tape; written musical scores will be digitised. Clark’s original compositions will be reinterpreted, remixed and recontextualised as part of the public showcase series.

Choreozone will create myriad opportunities for young people, including paid fellowships for 18-30 year-olds. Late 2023 will see the launch of a new round of our Catalyser talent development scheme focussing on heritage skills in oral histories and the curation of archive materials.

The funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund will allow Clod Ensemble to hire two new staff members – an Archivist and, in collaboration with LIFT Futures, an Apprentice Junior Content Creator – as well as a freelance Evaluator.
