Created for a group of live musicians and an audience, This is My Room is part-gig, part-installation. This Is My Room focuses attention on the live musician as performer, each with their own theatricality and musical voice, and we worked closely with the performers as the piece was developed.
The piece was created very slowly over many years, working first with Osterreich Ensemble fur Neue Musik and then with Manchester Collective. Performances took place during a short run in 2021 during a window of opportunity between two Covid-19 lockdowns, with shows taking place to a strictly limited and socially-distanced audience.
This is My Room is a spatial production. All the instruments were mic’d and played back over an eight-speaker rig. The spoken samples, all triggered live by Clod Ensemble’s then-associate artist Damsel Elysium, were collected over many years by Paul – from YouTube, the radio and TV, as well as from some interviews with performers.
The two short extracts are live recordings from the performances at Rose Lipman, 2021.
