It’s A Small House and We Lived In It Always (2000) is a collaboration between Clod Ensemble and Split Britches, the internationally renowned performance troupe led by Peggy Shaw and Lois Weaver.
Developed together with Peggy and Lois in the rehearsal room over many months, the score is largely acoustic, rooted in blues and country. Paul recorded parts for guitar, banjo, harmonica, accordion and trumpet.
The first clip below, Tornado, is a recurring musical theme, here turned into a rhythmically asymmetrical wallz for a set-piece movement sequence.
The second clip is an extract from a long sequence in which Peggy and Lois tell ever expanding lies to a musical score.
Music by Paul Clark
Vocals and performed by Lois Weaver & Peggy Shaw
“Paul Clark's music is flawless […] 'It's a Small House...' blends downhome blues with the mysterious wails of a harmonium to create something weirdly, brilliantly reminiscent of experimental American bands such as Gastr del Sol”
Time Out
“[a piece] admirably enhanced by Paul Clark's splendid score”
