An Anatomie in Four Quarters features four entirely different scores. For live performances of the show, each score is played by different musicians and viewed by the audience from different positions of large theatres. However, while they are separated, each section shares a small amount of material – a handful of melodies and a few characteristic rhythms.
The first quarter is a recorded soundtrack of percussion and the bagpipes of Galen Nikolov. This is followed by a section for live string orchestra (with a solo for singer Melanie Pappenheim) and then a section for thrashy power-duo (James Keane on bass and Vanessa Domonique on drums). All of this previous material comes together in a fourth quarter, when the audience join the performers on stage during live productions.
Below are three extracts from the score both of which feature samples of auctioneers, edited and tuned.
The first two clips are from the First Quarter – where the audience is in the Gods (the cheap seats at the back) listening to this soundtrack in surround sound, with the dancers far away on the stage.
The second clip is from the Second Quarter and features the string group (in this recording just four players) playing live in the pit of the theatre, with the audience now in the ‘expensive’ seats in the Dress Circle.

“[‘An Anatomie in Four Quarters’] presents big ideas more tantalising than its beguilingly various components.”
