In one of Paul Clark’s most celebrated scores for Clod Ensemble, two haunting 17th century canons are exploded into a densely-woven counterpoint for seven unaccompanied singers.
Recorded in the same week as Silver Swan’s 2012 performance at the Tate Modern, the waves of polyphony that crash upon the shore of Clark’s composition are hauntingly beautiful. While the core material is entirely borrowed from William Lawes and John Smith, Clark ushers the music into strikingly original territory – layering and morphing lines into a disorientating blur of vocal texture..
