Choreozone: Celebrating the Clod Ensemble Archive

Clod Ensemble’s multimedia archive documents the practices, processes and creative journeys of hundreds of artists that our Artistic Directors Suzy Willson and Paul Clark have worked with over the past three decades.

2023 saw Clod Ensemble launch Choreozone, a multi-year project focusing on the gathering, organising and sharing of materials in our archive. Supported by significant investment from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Choreozone will see works from our repertoire reinvigorated through public showcases and micro-exhibitions, both of which will honour the original performances as well as present new interpretations of the material.

Choreozone also includes a major project of restoration, distribution and reinterpretation from Clod Ensemble’s audio archive. Several of Clod Ensemble’s critically acclaimed music scores will be released to the public for the first time. Compositions which have never previously been recorded will be put to tape; written scores will be digitised; Clark’s original compositions will be reinterpreted, remixed and recontextualised as part of the public showcase series. The majority of these resources will be hosted on our website’s audio pages.

The project will also create myriad opportunities for young people, many of which are already underway. These include paid fellowships for 18-30 year-olds, a new apprenticeship at Clod Ensemble’s office and a series of industry events which share our learning with peers.
