Living Room Music is a course that enables ‘A’ Level music students to compose their own piece of music and hear it performed by professional musicians.

The course begins with a concert of theatricalised pieces by the likes of John Cage, Thierry de Mey and Steve Reich, followed up by two workshops and one mentoring session. By participating in workshops where theatre and music meet, the project aims to change student’s perceptions of modernism and to see music as a live performance as well as a recorded document.

Ultimately, the aim is to help them to create music that is provocative, witty and relevant.

In the mentoring session and rehearsals the students are given the invaluable resource of having seasoned professional musicians reacting to their scores - giving real-world practical advice on what it takes to make a score that is playable, readable and enjoyable.

The project culminates with a performance of the student’s compositions, played by the Clod Ensemble’s musicians.
